The home improvement industry has benefited from the three phases that followed COVID-19. In 2020, consumers faced societal restrictions that kept people home and focused share of wallet on the home. This new lifestyle preference prioritized home improvement spending alongside elevated home values in 2021. Then in 2022, we saw significant price inflation that buoyed comp store sales growth despite a return to more normalized traffic patterns / unit demand.

We are now in the fourth year of navigating the pandemic impact and with that we are seeing a cautious consumer and the home improvement industry hovering around flat comp store sales growth in the near-term with some incremental challenges on the horizon. Unlike the last two years, 2023 appears to likely bring an end to the significantly favorable price / mix benefit which has accounted for all the homecenter growth over the last 12-18 months.
